Wisata ini mencakup, kecintaan lingkungan (environment), pelestarian kebudayaan (protect the culture), menguntungkan masyarakat sekitar (benefit to local people), konservasi (conservation), menghambat polusi (pollution).

Benar.

“Kita butuh kepedulian bersama.

Poso is a port town on the southern shores of Teluk Tomini and was at one time a relatively small military post during the Dutch occupation of Indonesia. It is basically a transit port nowadays, but nonetheless, an interesting place to visit.

Recently, Ruslan Sangadji wrote an excellent article in regards to the Central Sulawesi Tourism Board’s efforts to revitalise tourism in the region and they consider the crystal waters of Danau Poso to be the ideal starting point. Here is the article for your perusal:

Apart from refugees, visitors have long shunned Lake Poso. Since conflict drove all willing visitors away, many of the lake’s tourist facilities have fallen into disrepair.

Before the outbreak of conflict in 1998, the lake, which sits 657 meters above sea level in Tentena, North Pamona district in Poso regency, Central Sulawesi, was well known for its beautiful scenery.

A newspaper article once compared the shores of Lake Poso to Bunaken beach in Manado, the beaches of Lombok, and Lake Toba, North Sumatra.

Its crystal clear water is greenish at its edge, becoming bluer as the water deepens towards the middle.

Before the conflict, the area was one of Central Sulawesi’s main tourist destinations, with many travel agencies including Lake Poso as one of the province’s must-see spots.

The local administration held the internationally-acclaimed annual Lake Poso Festival for foreign and domestic visitors.

Tourists did not just enjoy the beautiful lake, the black orchid forest and the cool climate, but also wished to meet the beautiful girls of Pamona — who are of mixed Chinese, Manado and Poso descent.

But all this was before the outbreak of the current fighting, which has claimed at least 1,000 lives.

These days Lake Poso, which spans 32 km from north to south and 16 km from east to west, is all but forsaken by visitors.

Facilities such as government-built cottages have been turned into shelters for people displaced by the conflict. Many of these facilities are falling into ruin.

But the Central Sulawesi Cultural and Tourism Office is unwilling to leave Lake Poso in isolation.

The office head, Mashud Kasim, said his office has dispatched a team to make a list of damaged facilities around the lake in order to rebuild the area.

“We have listed all damage caused by the conflict in the lake area and will start restoration in April,” Mashud said recently.

The tourism office, he said, would also revive the Lake Poso Festival, which was last held in 1997, once the restoration work around the resort area was completed.

“God willing, we will organize the festival at the end of this year. If that’s not possible, we will adjust the schedule according to the holiday season in Europe,” said Mashud, who will visit Germany to promote Central Sulawesi’s tourism potential.

To kick off the festival, Mashud said his office will organize a tour car rally, in cooperation with the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI), along the Palu-Poso-Tentena route.

“We hope the tour rally and festival will rejuvenate tourism in the area, so Lake Poso will no longer be left in isolation,” Mashud said.

Bali’s provincial government has begun sounding warning alarms due to the degradation of the island’s natural environment over the past decade. In an article published in Kompas, the erosion of Bali’s shore line now approaches 20%, 55,000 hectares of land mass are considered in a critical state and the island’s average temperature has increased to 33 degree Celsius. According to that report, much of the blame for the rapid decline in Bali’s natural environment is being laid at the door of the Island’s tourism industry.

The head of the Bali Environmental Agency, Gede Putu Wardana, confirmed the government’s growing concern over the environment, and said a long-term environmental protection plan stretching to 2050 is now being formulated.

According to Wardana, in the shorter term of 2009 to 2014 there are plans to replant Bali’s forests, stop the erosion of shorelines and re-green critical water-absorbent green zones.

Data provided by the Director General of Water Resources the air temperature in November 2008 reached 22-33 degrees Celsius. Previous to that, the average temperature ranges between 28-30 degrees Celsius.

At the same time, water levels are now 50 centimeters higher on almost all beaches of Bali.

The fast-declining condition of Bali’s environment is also underlined by the fact that the 51,950 kilometers of eroded shore line recorded in 1987 has now grown to 91,070 kilometers or approximately 20% of Bali’s entire shoreline (436,500). At the same time, officials report that the intrusion of sea water into the water table has become a major concern in many areas of the island.

A local activist from Conservation International Indonesia, Made Iwan Dewantama, has characterized the soon-to-be-announced timetable for preventing further environmental degradation as coming too late. He points to the many environmental and green conferences held in Bali, including the U.N. Climate Change Conference held in December 2007, as demonstrating that Bali has done little for the environment despite the dire warnings sounded during numerous conference held at the Island’s conventions centers.

Few have heard of Tarakan, an island located off East Kalimantan’s north, but developers there are confident it will one day be known as Indonesia’s “Little Singapore” and are looking to Bali’s success story to realize their dream.

The Bali Tourism Board (BTB) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tarakan municipality administration to increase awareness of the island as a tourist destination, including by advertising the location in Bali’s promotional forays, such as websites, road shows and in brochures.

“The potential for tourism in Tarakan may well complement Bali’s tourism industry and other tourism spots in Indonesia,” BTB spokesperson Sang Putu Subaya told The Jakarta Post during a visit to Tarakan.

“The more varied and numerous our offers, the more interested tourists become in visiting Indonesia,” he said.

Tarakan is approximately a third the size of Singapore and is home to 180,000 year rounders.

The slogan “Little Singapore”, which was pushed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his visit to Tarakan, derives from the island’s original function as a transit point for people entering and exiting Indonesia.

Tarakan’s municipal administration has imposed some of Singapore’s stringent hygiene regulations, including a strict waste-disposal system that requires that residents separate organic from inorganic garbage.

The island last year won the Adipura award for excellence in environmental management.

Indonesia’s tourism ministry said on Tuesday it expects a decline in tourist spending next year because of the global economic crisis, but sees visitor arrivals in a similar range to 2008.

Tourism accounts for about 3 percent of gross domestic product in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, but some areas, including the resort island of Bali, are heavily dependent on tourism for jobs and growth.

A recent shortage of alcohol in Jakarta and Bali, and concerns over Indonesia’s new anti-porn law — seen by some as a threat to artistic, religious and cultural freedom in the diverse archipelago — have led some tourists to complain or even threaten to stay away.

Other deterrents include long queues at the visa and immigration counters, and fears about the safety record of Indonesia’s domestic airlines.

“I understand that for foreigners alcohol is like tea or coffee for us, if there’s no alcohol then tourists are reluctant to come here,” Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik told a press briefing, adding that the issue was being resolved, particularly in top-tier hotels.

Importing alcohol has became prohibitively expensive following a clampdown by the authorities on widespread smuggling and under-invoicing of wines and liquor.

Earnings from tourism are forecast to fall to $6.5 billion next year, from an estimated $7.57 billion in 2008, the ministry said in a statement, with the average tourist expected to spend $1,000 per visit to Indonesia next year, compared with $1,178 per visit in 2008, and $970 in 2007.

The ministry also forecast that foreign arrivals would be between 6.25-6.5 million in 2009, compared with a preliminary figure of 6.4 million in 2008 when the government launched its “Visit Indonesia 2008″ campaign.

While tourist arrivals have risen this year, up from 5.5 million foreign tourists in 2007, Indonesia still lags far behind much smaller Asian countries, despite a wide variety of tourist attractions ranging from temples to volcanoes and jungle.

Neighbouring Singapore attracted 10.3 million visitors in 2007 thanks to its popularity as a stop-over on the way to other destinations. Thailand had targetted 15.5 million arrivals this year.

“As vacation isn’t a primary need, next year will be quite tough,” said Carla Parengkuan, executive director at the Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Association.

The occupancy rate at hotels in the country may fall by 5 percentage points to 60 percent next year as the crisis prompts travellers from Australia, South Korea, Japan and Russia to cancel their bookings, Parengkuan said.
